Safety and Adventure Sports

August 26th, 2011

Adventure sports are very manly. Also known as extreme and alternative sports, it is gaining a much wider set of followers than ever before. It gives one an adrenaline rush that nothing else can. Such sports are different from traditional ones in that they tend to be more risk oriented and cutting edge – if such a term can be used. There is a certain amount of danger also involved with such sports and it is this danger that attracts enthusiasts. It is more popular with the gen X and gen Y crowd than say, older people. Of course, there are exceptions and you do come across a granny who, tired of stitching dance fabrics for Kindergarten kids, decides to keep up with the Jones with a skydive.

It has its advantages in that it fosters a sense of self-esteem that can come about only by doing something that is not bogged down by rules. Of course, there is the physical benefit of exercise as most of these sports require a physically strong body to take the stress the sport entails.

The flip side of such sports is that there are acute injuries that are associated with this. They could result in severe trauma. Cuts and bruises may be insignificant compared to fractures, often multiple. Overuse of muscles may also result in chronic injuries. While giving into the teens'curiosity and risk-taking nature, it is also important to inculcate a habit of taking the necessary safety precautions however tedious or insignificant they may seem. Accidents may occur but taking the necessary precautions will ensure that injuries are minimized.
